History
The Shenyang J-16S is a modern Chinese multirole strike fighter developed from the J-11 airframe, itself based on the Russian Su-27. Introduced in the early 2010s, the J-16S features twin engines, a two-seat cockpit, and advanced avionics. Designed for long-range precision strikes and air superiority missions, it is equipped with an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, improved sensors, and the ability to carry a wide range of guided munitions. The aircraft incorporates radar-absorbent materials and digital flight systems, enhancing survivability and combat effectiveness. A specialised electronic warfare variant, the J-16D, was also developed to disrupt enemy defences. As of the mid-2020s, the J-16S forms a key part of China’s heavy fighter fleet, reflecting the country’s growing aerial capabilities.
